Spelling Bee 2020

Each year the kids participate in our local Homeschool Spelling Bee. Participating in a spelling bee is so beneficial for many reasons. It gives the children an opportunity to perform in public, fosters a sense of sportsmanship, it helps them learn about root words and word origins, increases their cognitive abilities and learning strategies.

This was Faith's first spelling bee!

As you can tell, I am pretty passionate about Spelling Bees! In fact, I have coordinated the Spelling Bee for the last 4 years.

Our pronouncer and judges are amazing!

This year we only had 9 participants. In years past we have had as many as 20 and had more signed up, but this has been a harsh flu season and many had to stay home from sickness.

Faith was out in round 2. She correctly spelled clever, and then misspelled falters.

Mig came in 5th out of the 9 spellers. He correctly spelled drum, bobcat, barber, broth, and understand. Mig was out in round 5 with the word deny.

Selah studied hard this year! After 24 rounds she came in 3rd place. She correctly spelled pie, proof, cooking, collect, fumble, results, pieces, health, manger, earthquake, chalk, station, microwave, pulse, dispute, fiercest, generation, shingle, differed, disinfectant, rookie, trombone, and staggered. In round 24 she was given the word "amplify" which she spelled "amplified" and was eliminated.

Our first and second place spellers were awarded trophies and were able to represent our homeschoolers at the County Bee. Our second place champion was not able to go to County Bee, so Selah was able to move on and represent us there! She did an amazing job! The County Bee is much more difficult than our district bee. Selah correctly spelled the words kiwi, hamstring, and mogul before spelling "dountlessly" instead of dauntlessly.

Some of the words at the County Bee include, par excellence, approbatory, lousicide, echinoderm, loquacious, garrulous, apocryphal, onychitis, and accoutrement. I am certain I would not even come close to winning!

I am so proud of all of the kids that get up and spell difficult words into a microphone in front of a crowd!
