A New Refrigerator - from Built-in to Counter Depth

A few months after we moved into this house our built-in refrigerator went out. Luckily we had a home-owners warranty that would cover the repairs. 6 months later, it went out again. For the last 4 years this fridge would go out every 6 months. We got to know the repair man pretty well, but were getting pretty frustrated! We looked at the price to replace a built in and the run $10,000 or more! Crazy!! I knew our warranty company would not pay that amount. Finally the fridge repairman called the built-in unpreparable. Our warrantee company gave us enough money to cover a standard fridge but only a fourth of what we would need to replace it with another built-in.

I looked everywhere to see if we could just replace it with a standard fridge - without it looking too bad and I couldn't find anyone that had posted about doing that anywhere. I was afraid that a stand alone was going to look awful in that spot.

We finally decided to just go for it! It doesn't look awful! We went with a counter depth so that we wouldn't have a lot hanging out past the wall. I am so happy with our new fridge and especially glad that we don't have to worry about it going out again in 6 months!

Here is our old built-in:

And here is our new reliable counter depth!! It comes out a little more than our built-in, but not much and it definitely isn't the eye-sore I was worried about!

As a side note: our house is approaching 20 years old. We had Old Republic Home Warranty. This year (2020 - go figure) they have paid to replace an a/c unit, a water heater, cleared a clogged pipe and repaired our fridge once and then paid to replace the fridge. We were supposed to renew our warranty at the end of September, but they denied us another year of coverage. HA!! I guess we got our money's worth, though! Now we are without warranty and praying we won't have any major repairs!
