Gabe started driver's ed in November. Because of COVID set backs, he wasn't able to get an appointment for his permit until May 5th.
Now he is working on his driving hours so that he will be able to get his license after his 16th birthday.
We have been talking about buying a cash car for the kids to drive and found out that our neighbor was selling their 2008 Spyder. It was a great price, so we bought it! Talk about a great incentive to work hard on those driving hours!!
Byron is happy to commute to work in it instead of the truck (way better gas mileage) until Gabe has his license. Once Gabe gets his own car, this one will be passed to the next driver.
I am still in shock that we are at this stage of parenting! Where does the time go?!?
This year we celebrated Cinco de Mayo on May 6th....Byron had a meeting and I had choir practice on the 5th and they kids still wanted to celebrate. So we ordered some tamales, made our paper bag piñatas and had a fiesta!
We Facetimed with GiGi so that she could have a virtual fiesta!
I like to think that the kids really love making piñatas and celebrating their culture, but I think it is really all about the candy.
I saw a Facebook rant about how true Mexicans do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo and that it is actually insulting to them that Americans use the day as a reason to eat tacos and drink magaritas. We are a family of mixed cultures and we like to use days like Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day and Chinese New Year to celebrate the cultures of our family. I know that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in in the US than it is in Mexico and that St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in the US more than in Ireland (in fact Patrick himself was English - not Irish), but it is more about recognizing culture to us than what the holidays themselves stand for. It is FUN and we have made a TON of good memories celebrating them! I hope the kids think back fondly on our cultural celebrations!
On May 2nd Mig and Faith's choir performed their Spring Concert.
This is Mig's last year in Kids Praise! Next year he will be in Middle School Choir!
This was my 6th year directing the Pre-Kindergarten choir. Their concert was about how to be a Champion of Faith. They are SO precious!!
The 1st-5th Graders presented Route 66 - a journey through all 66 books of the Bible.
Mig played the role of "Hero" - a boy sold out for God that helps explain the meta-narrative of the Bible to his friend, "Howie".
In 2015 Gabe played "Howie"!
Faith also had a speaking part!
One really cool part about this concert was the "Walk Through the Bible". The kids (Pre-K through 5th grade) presented the Bible story in motions from Creation to Revelation.
There is a video below of the Bible in Motions (if you are seeing this in an email, click anywhere on the email to go to the web version).
The program concluded with an awards ceremony. Each year the kids are challenged to memorize 10 hymns and 10 verses to go along with the hymns each year. By the 5th grade they have memorized 50 hymns and verses.
And below is the entire Spring Concert:
Faith received her 3rd year award - a trophy.
Mig received his 5th year award - a Bible engraved with his name.
