Cinco de Mayo 2016

We celebrated Cinco de May in true Serna style!

Isn't she the cutest little Asian in a sombrero you have ever seen?!?

We ate tacos, rice, beans and authentic pan dulce that the kids and I picked up from our local carniceria. Then the kids took turns swinging at their hand-made pinatas.

Last year, Faith was in full leg casts on both legs and I had to hold her so she could hit the pinata. This year, she hit it like a PRO!

Gabe reminds me of a young Don Quixote here.

We filled the pinatas with fun candy and prizes.

Finally, we had to get a picture of all of the kids in Papa Serna's old sombreros....they kept hitting each other in the faces trying to squeeze onto the bench!

We ended the fun evening by Face-timing GiGi and PopPop in Miami.

We love celebrating all of our kids' cultures, but Cinco de Mayo is always a favorite!

Cinco de Mayo fun!

We had a fun Cinco de Mayo fiesta yesterday!!!

I made enchiladas, rice and beans for dinner. During the day the kids each made a brown bag piñata. (Put about 3 handfuls of candy into a brown lunch sack. Fill the rest of the sack with crumpled newspaper. Punch holes around the top of the sack and then weave a long piece of yarn through the holes, pull tight to close the top. Then decorate the sack with strips of tissue paper cut into fringes.) After dinner they were able to beat their pinatas.

Love Selah's girly piñata!

As you can tell - they had a blast!!

Selah wore a dress that we bought in San Antonio last year and looked adorable. I asked if she would pose for a few pictures:

Mig also wanted to pose for a picture!

After the piñata fun, we went inside and had "fake" sopapillas - I cut tortillas in fourths and fried them in some veggie oil. Then I sprinkled them with cinnamon and sugar, drizzled some caramel syrup and topped it all with whipped cream! YUM!! It was a fun day!!

School Projects

We have just finished our 6th week of school! It has been a busy 6 weeks, too!

In History we have been studying the Renaissance time period. Last week we studied Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel. We finished our study by painting our own "Sistine Chapel". We taped a coloring sheet of part of Michelangelo's famous painting to the underside of their desks and they laid on their backs to paint them.

This was a fun project!!

In Science this year we are studying Chemistry. So far we have learned about elements, mixtures and compounds. This week we learned about the structure of atoms. We made giant atom models to go along with our studies. You can find directions to make these modes HERE

Of course, we take time out of our busy homeschooling schedule to do a little recess, too.
