In mid-July Byron noticed a bird nest in a potted plant by our front door. It had one egg inside. The next day, there were two egg. Then there were three. Finally there were four eggs. If we watched closely, we could even see the eggs shake! I researched the nest and decided it had to belong to a wren. I chronicled the nest over the next 30 days and it became such a joy for me!!
Finally on day 18, two babies hatched!
On day 19, the third egg hatched.
The 4th egg never hatched, and was useful as a pillow.
A week after they hatched I went to check on them. One baby was missing. Later that morning, I went back to see if the baby had fallen out and there was a BIG black snake on the porch! I assume he got one baby and was coming back for more before I scared him away!
They eventually realized that I was not bringing food and would hunker down in the next and pretend like they weren't there.
On the morning of day 30 we heard a lot of tweeting and chirping from the porch. When I went to check on them, they were gone. What sweet timing as they left the next Just two days before dropping my oldest child off at his college dorm. What a sweet gift to experience.
